Why was this pioneer Fort Lauderdale skyscraper named Sweet?
Perhaps it was an early example of naming a building after oneself. The November 9, 1929 edition of the Fort Lauderdale News reported that William L. Sweet, the new owner of the building and President of the Sweet Building Corporation officially announced the name change. He had purchased the building just five days earlier for $100,000 as reported by the paper. Read both 1929 newspaper articles below.
Whatever its name, the building stands out in many postcards published through the years, both as the Sweet and with its earlier moniker as the First National Bank building. All the postcards are from my personal collection.
