The Broward Hotel was featured and shown on many postcards throughout its lifespan from 1919 to 1974. The hotel opened in late 1919 as Fort Lauderdale’s first tourist hotel. It was built downtown at Andrews Avenue and Las Olas Boulevard near New River, which at the time was the center of action for the young town. Beach hotels were still a few years away. John Needham—a future Fort Lauderdale mayor—was the first manager and promoter and he would later play an instrumental role in an early beach hotel. The hotel had seen better days by the time she met the wrecking ball in May 1974. For an interesting history of the hotel follow the link to Jane Feehan’s article in Jane’s History Nook.
